Stephen Hawking was on to at least one factor when, in 1974, he proposed that black holes emit small streams of particles at their event horizons. These particles grew to turn out to be know as “Hawking radiation,” and primarily based totally on the physicist’s predictions, a black hole’s mass must determine its temperature.⠀

Researchers from the Technion-Israel Institute of Know-how examined his thought, nevertheless by creating a definite sort of black hole — one which absorbs sound — inside the lab, and measuring the temperature of its Hawking radiation. ⠀

The measurements matched what Hawking had predicted 45 years prior to now — nevertheless we gained’t know for constructive if his thought holds up in home until we’re able to check out the thought on the light-absorbing black holes populating our universe. Faucet the hyperlink in our bio to be taught further.⠀

  • How did we create a “sonic” black hole?

  • Can anyone clarify what it takes to absorb sonic waves rather than light waves? I imagine it’s proportionally similar to the theories about invisibility via bending light, but tested by bending different radiation waves first…

  • Am I remembering correctly when I say that I heard Mr Hawking’s early work predicted/described black holes but then in his latest work, he proved that they didn’t exist? Have I got that right? Since we are now talking about measuring black holes, I must have something wrong here…

  • People are going to feel silly when they find out once you get past the event horizon the temperature drops to absolute zero no matter the current size of the black hole AND there’s no such thing as Hawking Radiation AND the “death” of a black hole is simply the black hole acclimating to the surrounding temperature of space 😂

  • Not quite, the mass determined the pressure, from gravity which emits radiation, felt as heat. 🖖🏼 well done, carry on. 🥰
